This deal came up on my 2over1 series.
Suggested Auction in 2/1
Explanation of the Bids in the 2over1 Game Forcing System (2Over1)
2♣: In 2over1 responder shows at least game going values and 4(3)+ clubs. Responder prefers clubs over diamonds, bidding up the line to save vital bidding space. After 2♣, partner can rebid 2♦ at the 2 level. Rebidding clubs after a 2♦ response requires partner to bid clubs at the higher 3 level.
2♥: Opener describes his/her distribution and shows at least 5-4 in spades and hearts.
2NT: A key rebid in 2over1. Responder has a slam going hand. The 2NT rebid serves as a waiting bid – forcing to game. This rebid shows a NT oriented hand, allowing opener to make another 3-level rebid to describe his/her distribution more.
3NT: Opener has no other distribution to show. With a different hand, opener would rebid 3♥ to show 5-5, or 3♠ to show 6-4, or even 3♣ to show the 5-4-1-3 pattern.
6NT: The partnership’s best strain is set, NT. Responder could also rebid 4NT as a quantitative bid to invite slam. Holding 20 HCP is a close call. The partnership needs 33 HCP combined for a 6NT slam. Responder decides on 6NT. Note: Advancing a NT bid, 4NT should be used as a quantitative bid to 6NT, not RKCB.
Declaring 6NT with the ♥J Lead
Success in 6NT depends on timing the club finesse to establish the 5th spade. Transportation is an issue and declarer must be careful.
Trick 1: Declarer wins with the ♥A, an important play that allows the declarer to start the club finesse from the dummy.
Trick 2: Declarer takes the club finesse which proves successful.
Trick 3+4: Declarer plays the ♠A and continues with another spade to the ♠K/Q in the dummy.
Trick 5: Declarer cashes the third spade winner.
Trick 6: The key play - declarer surrenders a spade to establish the 5th round of spades.
Next declarer will cross to the dummy with the ♦K, a carefully preserved entry, to cash the promoted length winner in spades and to repeat the successful club finesse. Declarer’s winners: 4 spades, 3 hearts, 2 diamonds and 3 clubs. Declarer’s loser: 1 spade. Slam made!
